Amanda Nunes Stops Shayna Baszler At UFC Fight Night 62Brazilian standout Amanda “Lioness” Nunes once again showcased her striking power in a quick and one-sided victory tonight at UFC Fight Night 62: “Maia vs LaFlare” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nunes stopped Shayna “The Queen of Spades” Baszler in round one of their bantamweight bout.

From the outset, Nunes was a step ahead of Baszler and she hurt the veteran grappler with an early kick to the body. Baszler recovered and tried in vain to get the fight to the mat, but Nunes dropped her with a vicious leg kick and followed with punches to seal the dominant TKO victory.

Nunes (10-4-0) opened tonight’s action with leg kicks and an overhand right that got Baszler’s (15-10-0) attention. A front kick to the body and a one-two combination backed up Baszler, who winced in pain but remained on her feet. She dove at Nunes’s leg in an effort to take the Brazilian down, but Nunes pulled her foot free from Baszler’s grasp. Seconds later, Nunes dropped Baszler in a heap with a kick to the outside of her left knee and she dove in with follow-up punches until referee Mario Yamasaki pulled her off at the 1:56 mark.

Tonight’s victory was a crucial one for Nunes, who was stopped by recent UFC title challenger “Alpha” Cat Zingano in round three of a featured bout at UFC 178. She has won three of her four fights inside the Octagon and remains one of the most legitimate threats left for current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey.

Winner: Amanda Nunes by TKO (Leg Kick & Punches) at 1:56 of round one. She improves to 10-4-0.

  1. Baszler doesn’t have a fight in her anymore. If she’s not cut, retirement is an option.

  2. I didn’t see the fight, but read that it was pretty brutal, and that Amanda may have blown out Shayna’s left knee. No doubt it sounds like Baszler should retire. And now she’s all the way down in Brazil, probably in great physical pain. At least Rousey is there with her to help.
It’s quite a shame about Shayna, as her prime was 5-10 years ago, and she was very good at one time. But she will likely only be remembered for her failure on TUF and her two stoppage losses in the UFC. I know Baszler gets on some people’s nerves, but she’s very intelligent and had a great WWF-type personality for the sport. Unfortunately for her, the rise of WMMA came just a few years too late. At least she can count Rousey among her friends. And if there’s one person who won’t walk away from Shayna in her time of losing, it’s Rousey.

  3. I don’t think she landed one single strike on Amanda, who was a lot faster than she.
For the record, she was t.k.oed by a low kick… Her performance was embarrassing. She ate a few punches (7-8), and, then, was t.k.oed by a leg strike (Amanda had previously landed a front kick to her plexus)

  4. Amanda Nunes should fight the winner of Kaufmann / Davis, for the next title shot, after Tate/Eye…

  5. Davis already stopped Amanda Nunes back in 2011.
