UFC Fight Night 57: "Edgar vs Swanson" Play-By-Play & ResultsThe Ultimate Fighting Championship came to Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas tonight for UFC Fight Night 57: “Edgar vs Swanson.” The event was headlined by a five-round featherweight matchup between former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and Cub Swanson.

Also on tonight’s card, Bobby “King” Green took on Edson Barboza in the lightweight co-feature. Brad “One Punch” Pickett met Chico “King” Camus at 125. Jared “The Big Show” Rosholt battled Alexey “The Boa Constrictor” Oleinik at heavyweight. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for the card.

 

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar vs Cub Swanson

Round 1:
Edgar opened the action with a knee early on and Swanson answered with left and right hooks. He stuffed a takedown and landed more hooks in an exchange. Edgar drove forward for another takedown attempt, but Swanson defended and Edgar settled for landing a knee on the break. A winging right hook landed for Swanson, but Edgar finally got him down. Swanson escaped to his feet and both men landed one-twos. Edgar threw Swanson on his head and finished the round with short ground and pound. 10-9 Swanson despite the late takedown.

Round 2:
Swanson landed combinations to the head and body in round two and tripped Edgar with a leg kick, but Edgar returned to his feet and cut Swanson beside the left eye with a right hook. He took Swanson down into half-guard and landed short punches and elbows from the top. Swanson began to bleed more heavily from the cut beside his eye and Edgar kept the pressure on with more elbows. He momentarily held mount and stayed on top until the bell. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 3:
Swanson opened round three with jabs, but Edgar closed the distance and took his back against the cage. He tripped Swanson to the mat and worked from the top in Swanson’s half-guard. Edgar peppered Swanson with punches and elbows for the next four minutes and opened a new cut beside Swanson’s right eye. He maintained top position until the end of the one-sided round. 10-9 Edgar.

Round 4:
Edgar took Swanson back down in round four and he resumed his attacks from the top in Swanson’s half-guard. A series of punches and elbows scored for Edgar to Swanson’s head and body and he prevented Swanson from getting back to his feet. Edgar transitioned to mount and landed punches as Swanson rolled to his side to defend. Edgar flattened Swanson out and landed more punches as Swanson continued to roll over. With 20 seconds to go, a badly bloodied Swanson exploded back to his feet and the fighters traded jabs. 10-9 Edgar, if not a 10-8.

Round 5:
The final round began with an exchange of punches and Edgar took Swanson down once again. He used punches to set up a top-side guillotine choke, but Swanson escaped. Edgar continued to work from half-guard and he passed to mount soon after. He locked on an arm-triangle choke, but Swanson refused to submit and managed to break Edgar’s grip. Edgar mounted Swanson again and landed punches as Swanson tried to get to the cage wall to stand up. Edgar took his back and locked on a neck crank with mere seconds to go, forcing Swanson to tap out.

Winner: Frankie Edgar by Submission (Neck Crank) at 4:56 of round five. He improves to 18-4-1.

 

Edson Barboza vs Bobby “King” Green

Round 1:
Barboza landed a nice body kick in the opening minute, but Green caught it and tripped him to the mat. Barboza stood and kicked at Green’s lead leg. He followed with a combination to the body and head. Barboza continued to score with leg kicks and right hands as Green struggled to find his range. More leg kicks scored for Barboza and Green finally landed a body kick in return. 10-9 Barboza.

Round 2:
Barboza hurt Green with a right hand and dropped him to his knees with a spinning hook kick behind the ear in round two. Green recovered quickly, but Barboza landed looping punches. Green landed a flying knee and just missed with a spinning back elbow. He landed a punch-kick combo, but ate a flurry in return. Barboza fought off a clinch, but Green landed a jumping knee to the body and a leg kick. Another hard leg kick landed for Barboza before the bell. 10-9 Barboza.

Round 3:
Green cut Barboza near the right eye with a left hook in the final round, but Barboza fired back with a head kick and a right hand. Short counter hooks scored for Barboza and the fighters traded quick punches. Both men landed jabs and short hooks in close and Green began to get the better of the exchanges. He landed uppercuts and hooks, but Barboza froze him in place with a kick to the kidney. Time expired soon after. Close final round. 10-9 Barboza by a slim margin.

Winner: Edson Barboza by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 15-2-0.

 

Chico “King” Camus vs Brad “One Punch” Pickett

Round 1:
Camus landed a flying knee and a left hook early on and he thwarted Pickett’s attempt to take the fight to the mat. An uppercut, left hook combo landed for Camus, but Pickett fired back with punches and took him down. He postured up with elbows and passed to half-guard. A bloodied Camus scrambled up and he landed two lead left hooks. He mixed things up with kicks and got Pickett down for a split second. Pickett stood and Camus clipped him with a left hook. Close round. 10-9 Camus, just barely.

Round 2:
Camus scored with more hooks and uppercuts in the second round. Pickett drove forward for a takedown and Camus stayed on his feet. Pickett missed with a wild flying knee and Camus continued to pick him apart with punches. Powerful hooks were exchanged and Pickett took Camus down. Camus countered with a guillotine choke and stood back up. Pickett connected with a right hook and followed with a left. Another close round. 10-9 Camus.

Round 3:
Pickett secured a brief takedown in round three and he landed right hands after the fight returned to the feet. Camus countered a takedown attempt with a standing guillotine choke and circled away from the clinch. A right hook landed for Pickett and Camus answered with one-twos. He scored with a nice front kick to the body and a flurry of punches. Camus defended against a Pickett takedown attempt and the crowd grew restless with the lack of action. Pickett landed a front kick to the face and Camus replied with left hooks. Very close fight. 10-9 Camus.

Winner: Chico Camus by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 27-30) after three rounds. He improves to 15-5-0.

 

Alexey “The Boa Constrictor” Oleinik vs Jared “The Big Show” Rosholt

Round 1:
Huge punches were exchanged right away and Rosholt hurt Oleinik with knees and body shots. He secured a front headlock and tried to pull Oleinik to the mat. In the clinch, he battered Oleinik with uppercuts and standing elbows. Oleinik broke free from the clinch and began to find success with punching combinations. He landed an uppercut and followed with a right-left combo that dropped an unconscious Rosholt like a rock. Oleinik landed more punches on the ground and the fight was stopped.

Winner: Alexey Oleinik by KO (Punches) at 3:21 of round one. He improves to 50-9-1.

 

Joseph Benavidez vs Dustin Ortiz

Round 1:
Benavidez landed a body kick and a three-punch combo in the opening minute. A quick one-two scored for Benavidez and Ortiz just missed with a counter right. Benavidez landed a head kick and a left hook. He finished a combination with an overhand right that backed Ortiz up. More punches and a knee scored for Benavidez and he continued to land first in the striking exchanges. With 30 seconds to go, Benavidez took Ortiz down and he tried for a top-side guillotine choke. 10-9 Benavidez.

Round 2:
The second round began with a flurry and a head kick from Benavidez, who hurt Ortiz moments later with another vicious head kick. Ortiz stayed on his feet and shot in for a takedown. He got Benavidez down for a split second and took his back on the way up. Benavidez broke away and wobbled Ortiz with a left hook. He followed with a right cross, but Ortiz caught a kick and took him down. Benavidez scrambled up and landed another big right hook. A punch-knee combo landed for Benavidez, as well as a winging overhand right seconds later. He took Ortiz’s back before the bell. 10-9 Benavidez.

Round 3:
Ortiz landed combinations early in round three and attempted a takedown, but Benavidez sprawled out. Ortiz worked back to his feet and landed punches on the way up. Benavidez ducked under punches from Ortiz and took his back, then suplexed him to the mat. Ortiz battled back to his feet and dragged Benavidez down from back control. Benavidez turned into the clinch and stood up. He stuffed another takedown, but Ortiz got him down on his second try. On the feet, Benavidez landed a winging right and Ortiz kicked to the body. Close final round. 10-9 Benavidez, barely.

Winner: Joseph Benavidez by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 21-4-0.

 

“Handsome” Matt Wiman vs Isaac Vallie-Flagg

Round 1:
Valie-Flagg clinched early in the fight and landed a series of short punches and elbows over the top. Wiman countered with elbows of his own, but Vallie-Flagg continued to get the better of the clinch battles and he landed an uppercut after Wiman backed away. Wiman landed a nice knee and stuffed a takedown against the cage. He hopped on Vallie-Flagg’s back and tried to set up an armbar. He switched to a triangle armbar and back to a conventional one before the bell. 10-9 Wiman due to the late rally.

Round 2:
Vallie-Flagg threw standing elbows and attempted a takedown against the cage in round two. Wiman broke free and scored with a nice combination, but Vallie-Flagg closed the distance and clinched again. He landed uppercuts and Wiman replied with an elbow. More uppercuts landed for Vallie-Flagg and they set off an exchange of power punches and standing elbows. Wiman stuffed another takedown and hopped on Vallie-Flagg’s back again. Vallie-Flagg escaped from an armbar attempt and the fight returned to the feet. Wiman finished the round with punches and elbows in the clinch. 10-9 Wiman.

Round 3:
The final round quickly returned to a clinch and the fighters once again exchanged punches and standing elbows. Referee Mario Yamasaki separated them and Wiman pressed forward with a combination. He targeted the body with punches and Vallie-Flagg responded with a left hook. Wiman pulled him to the mat with a front headlock and transitioned to back control. He worked for a rear-naked choke throughout the final two minutes, but Vallie-Flagg defended until the final bell. 10-9 Wiman.

Winner: Matt Wiman by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 16-7-0.
