Polish striking sensation Joanna Jędrzejczyk sent a message to the rest of the women’s flyweight division with a crushing knockout win tonight at Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 69: “Super Saturday” in London, England. Jędrzejczyk stopped MMA pioneer Rosi “The Surgeon” Sexton in round two.

Jędrzejczyk, a multi-time kickboxing world champ who is one of Europe’s brightest female MMA prospects, stuffed all of Sexton’s takedown attempts and dominated the fight on the feet. Earlier in the night, Kerry “Rocksteady” Hughes stopped Muay Thai striker Amanda Kelly late in the second round.

Jędrzejczyk (6-0-0) picked her shots with single punches to the head and body early in the fight, and she and Sexton (13-5-0) exchanged combinations. Jędrzejczyk shrugged off a series of takedown attempts from Sexton and repeatedly connected with overhand rights. Late in the round, Jędrzejczyk dropped Sexton with a right hook and she followed with more strikes on the ground. Sexton recovered and managed to stand up before the bell, but she was unsteady on her feet heading to her corner.

Jędrzejczyk was aggressive with punching flurries early in the second stanza and she fought off more takedowns from Sexton, who eventually pulled half-guard. Jędrzejczyk stood up and the fight returned to the feet. Soon after, Jędrzejczyk backed Sexton up to the cage and dropped her with a big right hook. A barely-conscious Sexton fell forward on the mat and the fight was waved off.

Tonight’s win solidified Jędrzejczyk’s spot as one of the premier female strikers in MMA today. With close to 100 kickboxing bouts under her belt, the 26-year-old Polish star is poised to be a top title contender in the flyweight division or as a strawweight if she makes the move down to 115 pounds.

Winner: Joanna Jędrzejczyk by KO (Punch) at 2:36 of round two. She improves to 6-0-0.

On the preliminary portion of the Cage Warriors 69 card, Hughes (2-1-0) showcased her striking skills by finishing Kelly (1-2-0) with punches just before the end of round two.

The fighters traded punches in the opening round and Hughes countered kicks from Kelly by shooting in for a takedown. Kelly stayed on her feet and defended with elbows, but Hughes kept her pinned against the cage for more than two minutes. Kelly finally broke free, but Hughes caught her with an overhand right. She clinched again and tried unsuccessfully to take Kelly down before the end of the round.

Kelly picked up the pace with punches and a variety of kicks in round two. She stuffed more takedowns and mixed up her strikes effectively. Hughes landed some nice right hands of her own, but she could not get Kelly down and Kelly began to pick her apart with leg kicks. Hughes limped on her lead leg, but she connected with a powerful overhand right that sent Kelly careening to the canvas. Hughes dove in with more punches and referee Marc Goddard intervened to rescue Kelly from further punishment.

Hughes’s win got her back on track after she suffered the first loss of her MMA career against highly-touted Polish teen prospect Agnieszka “Kuma” Niedźwiedź in December. Of Hughes’s five pro and amateur victories, three have come via a form of knockout.
