TUF 18 Episode 12 Recap: Davey Grant Receives Bye To FinalsFor the second time this season, weight issues resulted in a cancelled fight during tonight’s 12th episode of The Ultimate Fighter 18: “Team Rousey vs Team Tate.” Davey Grant received a bye to the final round when teammate Anthony “Sharkbait” Gutierrez failed to make the 135-pound weight limit.

Gutierrez had himself received a bye to the semi-finals when his opponent, Cody Bollinger, was also unable to make weight. Like Bollinger, Gutierrez was exiled from the show. The semi-final round wraps up next Wednesday when Raquel “Rocky” Pennington faces Jessica “The Ragin'” Rakoczy.

Tonight’s episode focused heavily on the weight issue from start to finish. After recapping Bollinger’s struggles with the scale, the show documented Gutierrez’s well-known history of eating poorly and leaving significant weight cuts to the last minute. Gutierrez maintained that he would make weight.

The middle portion of the episode featured this season’s coaches’ challenge. Rivals “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey and Miesha “Cupcake” Tate faced off in a rock climbing competition. Tate opened up with a slight lead early on, but Rousey picked up the pace during the second half of the challenge and she narrowly defeated Tate to win $10,000 for herself and $1500 for each of her team members.

Rousey’s victory celebration was cut short when Gutierrez woke up nine pounds overweight on the day of weigh-ins. He cut down to 140 before giving up and was subsequently sent packing. Grant took no satisfaction in his default win and was clearly upset that he did not get to fight.

Next week’s 13th episode of TUF 18 concludes the qualifying round. In the last remaining semi-final, Team Tate’s Pennington takes on Team Rousey’s Rakoczy. However, tonight’s preview of the upcoming episode noted that both women sustain injuries during training that may affect their ability to compete.

The Ultimate Fighter 18 airs weekly leading up to the finale on November 30th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
