UFC 140: "Jones vs Machida" Live Play-By-Play & ResultsThe Ultimate Fighting Championship travelled to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight for UFC 140: “Jones vs Machida.” The event was headlined by a UFC Light Heavyweight Championship showdown between champion Jon “Bones” Jones and Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida.

In the co-feature, former PRIDE and UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira clashed with fellow ex-champ Frank Mir for the second time. Rodrigo’s twin brother Rogerio faced Tito Ortiz at light heavyweight. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for tonight’s card.

 

UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

Jon “Bones” Jones vs Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida

Round 1:
Machida evaded Jones’s early kicks and punch attempts and stayed on the outside. He landed a leg kick and Jones answered with one of his own. Jones threw a front kick to the leg and followed with another kick, but Machida cracked him with a counter left hand and Jones backed up. Machida closed in with punches and Jones threw a counter knee.

Jones landed another leg kick, but Machida drilled him with a hard kick to the body. Jones regained his footing and kicked at the upper body. A leg kick landed for Jones, but Machida flurried with punches in close. Another big combination backed Jones up and Machida began to take control of the striking exchanges. Jones attempted a head kick and ate a right hand. 10-9 Machida.

Round 2:
Leg kicks landed for both fighters in the opening seconds of round two. Jones landed a grazing head kick and missed with follow-up strikes. The crowd began to chant Machida’s name and he landed a short left hand. Jones continued to try to find his range with leg kicks and he landed a body kick, but Machida countered with a series of hooks. Jones retreated, but regained his balance and clinched. A big right hand scored for Jones and he took Machida down against the cage.

Jones cut him badly on the forehead with an elbow and Machida began to bleed heavily on the canvas. Jones attempted a guillotine choke as the fighters stood. Time was called to check Machida’s cut. Action resumed in the clinch and Jones landed a nice knee. A huge left hand dropped Machida to his knees. He stood up and Jones locked on a power guillotine choke. Machida did not tap and was quickly rendered unconscious. The fight was stopped and Machida collapsed to the mat.

Winner: Jon Jones by Technical Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 4:26 of round two. He improves to 15-1-0 and remains the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

 

Frank Mir vs Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira

Round 1:
Nogueira jabbed his way into a clinch early on and looked for a takedown, but Mir defended and stayed on his feet. Nogueira landed short right hands over the top and Mir countered with knees to the body. Nogueira reversed the clinch and landed a knee, but Mir tripped him to the mat. Nogueira scrambled to his feet and landed two forearm strikes. Mir kneed in return and Nogueira landed a flurry.

Nogueira badly rocked Mir with punches and Mir fell face-first to the canvas. Mir appeared to be bordering on unconsciousness as Nogueira landed hammerfists. Mir somehow survived and Nogueira tried for a guillotine choke. Mir escaped and moved to side control. He locked on a Kimura and rolled through. Nogueira did not initially tap, so Mir broke his arm and Nogueira tapped out just as referee Herb Dean intervened. Incredible fight.

Winner: Frank Mir by Submission (Kimura) at 3:38 of round one. He improves to 16-5-0.

 

Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira vs Tito Ortiz

Round 1:
Ortiz landed a head kick and big punches right away, but Nogueira fired back with a flurry of his own. Ortiz looked for a takedown and Nogueira defended. Ortiz landed short right hands and an uppercut, but Nogueira cracked him with a left hand and a knee. He swarmed with a barrage of punches and another knee. Ortiz collapsed to the mat and Nogueira unloaded with strikes.

Ortiz recovered and tried to set up a triangle choke from the bottom, but Nogueira punished him with punches and elbows to the head and body. Big hammerfists scored for Nogueira, but Ortiz held on. Nogueira continued to tee off with punches and elbows to the body that appeared to injure Ortiz’s ribs. He rolled to his side and the fight was stopped.

Winner: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by TKO (Punches & Elbows To The Body) at 3:15 of round one. He improves to 20-5-0.

 

Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole vs Claude “The Prince” Patrick

Round 1:
Ebersole tried for a takedown early in the fight and Patrick defended with knees. Ebersole backed Patrick up to the cage, but Patrick landed more kenes and doubled Ebersole over with one of them. Ebersole dropped down for a double-leg, but Patrick pulled guard with a tight guillotine choke. Ebersole held on and Patrick eventually released the choke.

Patrick scrambled up to his feet and Ebersole landed a stiff jab. Two punches and a knee scored for Patrick, but Ebersole answered with more jabs and a hook to the body. Ebersole muscled Patrick up against the cage again and short strikes were exchanged. Patrick snuck in a handful of left hands just before the bell. Close round. 10-9 Patrick.

Round 2:
Ebersole jabbed early in round two and Patrick backed him up with jabs of his own. He landed two knees and tried for a takedown, but Ebersole stepped to the side and circled free. Patrick clinched again and landed a left hook over the top and a knee. Ebersole scored with a hard elbow strike and dropped down for a single-leg takedown.

Patrick stayed on his feet and landed a knee, but Ebersole kept him pressed up against the cage. Patrick eventually circled away and landed a front kick and a knee. He followed with punches as Ebersole covered up. Patrick caught a kick and briefly took Ebersole’s back. After a quick exchange of knees, Patrick landed a nice flurry and the round ended in a clinch. 10-9 Patrick, barely.

Round 3:
Ebersole dove for a takedown right away in the final round, but Patrick sprawled out to defend. He briefly looked to set up a choke, but wound up on his back. Ebersole struck from the top and Patrick answered with palm strikes. He stood up, but Ebersole took his back and suplexed him to the mat. He maintained back control on the ground as Patrick crawled towards the cage. Ebersole landed knees to the leg and body as Patrick stood.

Patrick spun into the clinch and defended against Ebersole’s takedown attempts. Ebersole dragged Patrick to the mat, but Patrick moved to a back-side crucifix and took top position. He tried for a guillotine choke, but Ebersole spun and the fighters stood. Patrick landed punches and Ebersole threw an elbow. Patrick countered a takedown with an Anaconda Choke, but lost it. 10-9 Ebersole. Fight could go either way.

Winner: Brian Ebersole by Split Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) after three rounds. He improves to 59-14-1, 1 NC.

 

“The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung vs Mark “The Machine” Hominick

Round 1:
Hominick stepped forward right away, but was dropped by a counter right hand. He fell to the mat and Jung swarmed with punches until Hominick was briefly out cold.

Winner: Chan Sung Jung by KO (Punches) at 0:07 of round one. He improves to 12-3-0.
