Armageddon Fighting Championship returned to the Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada tonight for AFC 5: “Judgment Day.” The main event featured a 135-pound women’s bout between former Strikeforce champion Sarah Kaufman and Japanese MMA pioneer Megumi Yabushita.

Also on the card, veteran Canadian fighters Nick “The Juggernaut” Hinchliffe and Ryan Machan squared off in welterweight action, while David Perron put his undefeated record on the line against experienced middleweight Andrew Buckland. Sarah Kaufman vs Megumi Yabushita

Round 1:
Yabushita missed with a spinning backfist early on and Kaufman stayed on the outside. she threw jabs and single right hands, then connected with a hard left hook. Kaufman flurried and Yabushita circled away. Kaufman landed a rare leg kick and a one-two as Yabushita struggled to find her range. Kaufman backed Yabushita up with more right hands and a leg kick.

A big left hook landed for Kaufman, who aggressively pushed forward with punches that bloodied Yabushita’s nose. Yabushita circled out and was visibly frustrated. Kaufman’s superior striking continued to tell the story, as she landed punches and leg kicks at will. Two hard right hands and a kick to the upper body landed for Kaufman before the bell. 10-9 Kaufman.

Round 2:
The fighters traded leg kicks in the second round and Yabushita missed with a looping overhand right. She threw an axe kick and Kaufman countered with a nice one-two. Jabs and quick punches followed for Kaufman, but she was unable to land anything overly damaging. Kaufman used a leg kick to set up a combination, then blasted Yabushita with three hard kicks to the leg.

A left hook and a knee sent Yabushita backwards, but she stayed on her feet. Kaufman scored with a flurry and Yabushita retreated again. Kaufman followed up with kicks to the leg and body as Yabushita turned her back and walked away, frustrated. Kaufman kept the pressure on with more punches and another kick in the final seconds. 10-9 Kaufman.

Round 3:
Kaufman began the final round with a punching combination and another hard leg kick. Yabushita circled away and Kaufman drilled her with two left hooks and a right cross. Another left hook backed Yabushita up and Kaufman hurt her with an overhand right. Yabushita turned away and backpedalled as Kaufman teed off with punches.

Yabushita stayed on her feet, but was unable to land anything. Kaufman jabbed and connected with a right cross. Yabushita backed up to the cage and slipped on water or the bottom lip of the fencing. Kaufman immediately dove in with punches and absolutely unloaded with big left hands as Yabushita stood up. The referee stepped in to save a defenceless Yabushita.

Winner: Sarah Kaufman by TKO (Punches) at 3:34 of round three. She improves to 13-1-0.

 

Nick “The Juggernaut” Hinchliffe vs Ryan Machan

Round 1:
The fighters exchanged jabs and leg kicks early on and time was called after Hinchliffe was kicked in the groin. The fight quickly resumed and Hinchliffe landed a nice right hook. He stuffed a takedown and landed another right hook. Machan jabbed again, but Hinchliffe landed a one-two to the body and temple. Hinchliffe scored with two hard right hooks that staggered Machan briefly.

Machan recovered, but ate a left hook counter from Hinchliffe, who backed away. Machan tried to set up an overhand right with jabs, but came up short. He walked Hinchliffe down, but Hinchliffe blocked Machan’s punches. Hinchliffe unloaded with two big haymakers, but Machan stayed on his feet. He landed another right before the bell. 10-9 Hinchliffe.

Round 2:
More jabs and leg kicks landed for both fighters in the second round and Hinchliffe connected with a big right hook. He followed with a left, but Machan circled and landed a combination. Machan scored with a monster right hand and backed him up with more punches. Hinchliffe, bleeding from the nose, clinched. Machan broke free and landed a head kick.

Hinchliffe fired off a hard leg kick and followed with another, but Machan countered with a punch to the body. Hinchliffe landed more leg kicks and Machan countered with jabs. Machan scored a takedown late in the round, but Hinchliffe sprung to his feet and landed big knees to the body in a clinch. Another close round. 10-9 Machan.

Round 3:
Hinchliffe backed Machan up with a looping right hook and a follow-up left in the final round, then resumed his assault with leg kicks. He missed with another wild right, but landed a leg kick. Machan countered with a right cross and jabs that snapped Hinchliffe’s head back. Hinchliffe landed more leg kicks and a one-two.

Another vicious leg kick landed for Hinchliffe and he continued to batter Machan’s lead leg. Machan began to limp slightly as he circled away. Hinchliffe landed a three-punch flurry in close and remained the aggressor. Machan scored with a one-two, but was Hinchliffe countered with even more leg kicks. Both fighters landed big punches and Hinchliffe appeared to injure his left hand. 10-9 Hinchliffe.

Winner: Nick Hinchliffe by Majority Decision (30-28, 29-28, 29-29) after three rounds. He improves to 18-7-0.

 

Andrew Buckland vs David “Showtime” Perron

Round 1:
Buckland opened the fight with leg kicks, but ate a devastating body kick from Perron, who attempted a guillotine choke in the clinch. Perrone used the choke to push Buckland to the mat and landed in mount. Buckland scrambled and managed to get back to his feet, but Perron took his back and landed a knee. He dragged Buckland to the mat with a rear-naked choke and Buckland fought to escape.

Buckland avoided the choke, but Perron was relentless and attempted another one. He continued to work for the choke as Buckland pushed off of the cage to try to sweep and escape. Perron moved to mount late in the round, but Buckland immediately reversed and landed big punches from a standing position until the bell. 10-9 Perron.

Round 2:
Buckland threw a capoiera kick and tripped Perron to the mat in round two, but Perron reversed and worked for a takedown of his own. Buckland countered with an arm-in guillotine choke, but Perron refused to tap and Buckland stood up while maintaining a front headlock. He landed elbows and transitioned to Perron’s back. He landed punches and secured another guillotine choke as Perron tried to stand up. Buckland trapped Perron in full guard and Perron was forced to tap to the choke.

Winner: Andrew Buckland by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 3:47 of round two. He improves to 13-8-1.

 

Derek “Mad Dog” Medler vs Jarod “The Milkman” Milko

Round 1:
Milko landed a hard overhand right early on, but Medler was unfazed and stuffed a takedown. Medler tripped Milko to the mat against the cage He used punches to move to half-guard, but Milko defended well. Medler moved to side-control and took Milko’s back. He used punches to set up a tight rear-naked choke, but Milko managed to pull Medler’s arm away.

Milko scrambled to his feet and tripped Medler to the mat, but Medler sprung back up and took Milko back down. Medler landed short strikes from the top until Milko escaped to his feet. A nice combination of punches followed for Medler before the bell. Good round. 10-9 Medler.

Round 2:
Medler walked Milko down early in the second round, but Milko exploded with a five-punch flurry and a follow-up shot to the body. He attempted a takedown, but Medler stuffed it and scored with a knee. Milko threw a wild head kick and fell to the ground. Medler took advantage by punching from Milko’s guard. Milko looked for an armbar, to no avail. Medler took Milko’s back in a scramble and locked on a rear-naked choke. Milko tried to hold on, but was forced to submit.

Winner: Derek Medler by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:30 of round two. He improves to 5-0-0.

 

Nick Driedger vs Brendan Frost

Round 1:
Frost landed hard punches and kicks to the body early in the opening round and backed Driedger up with a right hook. Driedger took Frost down and landed punches, but Frost battled back to his feet. Driedger targeted the body with punches and the fighters battled for position. Frost landed a knee and threw a glancing spinning back kick.

Driedger countered a spinning backfist by taking Frost down. He used a trio of solid right hands to move to half-guard. Driedger added elbows from the top as well, but Frost swept and got back to his feet against the cage. He tried unsuccessfully for a guillotine choke before the bell. 10-9 Driedger.

Round 2:
A big right hand landed for Frost in round two, but Driedger countered with punches that backed Frost up. Frost stuffed a takedown and secured a front headlock against the cage, but Driedger slammed him to the mat. Short punches and elbows scored for Driedger as Frost tried to hold on to defend. Driedger landed punches to the body as well and stood up.

Frost kicked at Driedger’s knees and Driedger returned to Frost’s half-guard. He struck from the top for nearly a minute, but Frost pushed off of the cage and swept. Frost wound up on top in mount, then took Driedger’s back. He attempted a rear-naked choke, but Driedger defended until the bell. Close round. 10-9 Driedger.

Round 3:
Frost pushed forward with punches and a spinning back kick, but Driedger cracked him with counterpunches. A one-two scored for Driedger and Frost clinched. He landed a knee to the body and a body kick, but Driedger caught it and sent Frost to the mat with a right hook. Driedger allowd Frost to stand and the fighters traded single hooks as Frost bled from the nose. Driedger backed Frost up to the cage and threw short punches to the body.

The fighters separated and both landed solid punches. Driedger again backed Frost up to the fence and Frost countered with a knee. He looked for a standing guillotine choke, but Driedger took him down. Driedger stood and allowed Frost to get back to his feet. He landed two lunging punches and Frost answered with a knee. Driedger landed more punches, but was hit by a spinning backfist. He backed Frost up to the cage one more time and landed short punches. 10-9 Driedger.

Winner: Nick Driedger by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after three rounds. He improves to 5-1-0.
