WEC 48: "Aldo vs Faber" Live Play-By-Play & ResultsWorld Extreme Cagefighting held its first major pay-per-view event tonight with WEC 48: “Aldo vs Faber” at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California. The stacked card was headlined by a WEC Featherweight Championship bout between Jose Aldo and “The California Kid” Urijah Faber.

In a rematch of their 2009 Fight of the Year battle, Ben “Smooth” Henderson and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone once again clashed for the WEC Lightweight Championship, while former 145-pound champ Mike Brown faced Manny “The Anvil” Gamburyan. MMARising.com has live play-by-play for the event.

 

WEC Featherweight Championship

Jose Aldo Junior vs “The California Kid” Urijah Faber

Round 1:
Faber threw quick kicks early on and Aldo answered with one of his own. Faber missed with a two-punch combination, but remained the aggressor. Aldo tripped Faber to the mat with a leg kick, but allowed him to stand. Faber missed with a flying knee and Aldo scored with a body shot and a leg kick. Faber tried for a takedown and Aldo easily evaded. Faber landed a glancing one-two and followed with a lead right hook.

Aldo missed with a kick and Faber landed another hook. Faber ate a big knee to the body as he pressed forward, but he recovered and landed a body kick. Faber followed with a one-two and a body shot. He kept the pressure on with more punches, but Aldo hurt him with a knee to the ribs. Aldo landed a spinning back kick before the bell. Very even round. Faber landed more strikes, but Aldo did all of the damage. 10-10.

Round 2:
Faber tried to set up a combination in the second round, but Aldo kept his distance and landed kicks to the leg and body. Quick punches were exchanged and neither landed cleanly. Aldo just missed with a big uppercut and landed a left hook. Aldo returned to leg kicks and attempted a flying knee. Faber looked for a takedown and Aldo simply sidestepped.

Another hard leg kick landed for Aldo and Faber winced. Faber jabbed and ate another leg kick. Aldo scored with a punch-kick combo and a hard leg kick. Again, Aldo targeted the body and followed with a leg kick that buckled Faber’s left leg. Another leg kick landed for Aldo and Faber limped away. Two more kicks scored for Aldo before the bell. 10-9 Aldo.

Round 3:
Faber tried to protect his damaged left leg in the third round and clinched, but Aldo shrugged him off. A leg kick hurt Faber and Aldo followed with another one. Aldo continued to punish Faber with kicks as Faber could barely stand. Faber threw a one-two and ate a body shot. Faber caught a kick, but Aldo scrambled free.

A leg kick, a one-two to the body and a head kick all landed for Aldo. He teed off with punches, but Faber weathered the storm and fired back with a one-two of his own. Aldo landed another leg kick and a left hook. Another vicious leg kick landed. Aldo scored with a left to the liver and a flurry. He dropped Faber and punched until the bell. 10-9 Aldo.

Round 4:
A leg kick and a right hand landed for Aldo in the fourth round. Aldo hurt Faber badly with another kick to the left leg and wound up on top. Aldo moved to mount and then took Faber’s back. Aldo worked for a rear-naked choke, but Faber scrambled back to his feet. Aldo dropped Faber with a leg kick and followed with punches.

From Faber’s half-guard, Aldo landed an elbow and he moved to side-control. Aldo isolated Faber’s arms in a crucifix and punished him with short left hands. He switched to elbows and continued to batter Faber. More short punches and elbows landed for Aldo for the remaining 90 seconds of the round. Faber survived. 10-8 Aldo.

Round 5:
Faber tried to set up a combination in the final round and ate another leg kick. The pace slowed and Faber threw a side kick to the ribs. Faber tried desperately for an ankle pick takedown, but Aldo spun free. He stood over Faber until referee Josh Rosenthal returned the fight to the feet.

Faber attempted another takedown and wound up somersaulting forward as Aldo defended. Another weak takedown attempt followed and Aldo punished Faber with a body shot. Faber flopped to his back after a failed shot and Aldo stood over him. Aldo landed punches before the bell. 10-9 Aldo.

Winner: Jose Aldo by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 49-45, 49-45) after five rounds. He improves to 17-1-0 and remains the WEC Featherweight Champion.

 

WEC Lightweight Championship

Ben “Smooth” Henderson vs Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone

Round 1:
Henderson opened the fight with a leg kick as the fighters looked to find their range. He caught a kick from Cerrone and tried for a takedown. Cerrone stuffed it and a clinch followed against the cage. Henderson landed knees to the leg and face. Cerrone spun and Henderson took him down. He landed punches from the top and locked on a tight guillotine choke as Cerrone stood. Henderson dragged Cerrone to the ground and he was forced to hastily tap out. Huge victory for Henderson.

Winner: Ben Henderson by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 1:57 of round one. He improves to 12-1-0 and remains the WEC Lightweight Champion.

 

Manny “The Anvil” Gamburyan vs Mike Brown

Round 1:
Brown landed a right hook 20 seconds into the fight and kept Gamburyan on the defensive. He just missed with another looping right and Gamburyan circled to the side. Gamburyan threw an uppercut and followed with a flurry to the body. Brown pushed forward with a one-two, but Gamburyan floored him with a short right hook. He followed with punches and hammerfists on the ground as Brown went limp. Big upset win for Gamburyan.

Winner: Manny Gamburyan by KO (Punches) at 2:22 of round one. He improves to 11-4-0.

 

Shane Roller vs Anthony Njokuani

Round 1:
Roller immediately clinched and tried for a trip takedown. Njokuani did well to stay on his feet, but Roller managed to get him down. Njokuani stood and was taken down again. Roller moved to mount and secured a guillotine choke from the top. He used it to transition to Njokuani’s back and worked for a rear-naked choke. Njokuani escaped and Roller continued to try for submissions. Roller rolled Njokuani over and finally locked on the choke, forcing Njokuani to immediately tap out.

Winner: Shane Roller by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) at 3:07 of round one. He improves to 8-2-0.

 

Scott “Young Guns” Jorgensen vs Antonio Banuelos

Round 1:
Banuelos landed a quick leg kick and a short left hook in round one. Jorgensen fired back with a flurry and Banuelos answered with one of his own. The fighters clinched, but broke free soon after. More quick punches followed from both and Banuelos landed a stiff leg kick. Jorgensen kept the pressure on, but Banuelos snapped his head back with two jabs. He dropped Jorgensen with a short left hook.

Jorgensen recovered and tried for an armbar as Banuelos threw elbows. Banuelos escaped and stood up. The fighters clinched and Banuelos broke free with a one-two. He landed a combination and Jorgensen fired back with a head kick. Jorgensen clinched and landed a knee. Banuelos scored with a spinning back kick to the body. He landed more kicks before the bell. 10-9 Banuelos.

Round 2:
Jorgensen pushed forward with a combination and a body kick in the second round. He threw high and low kicks, but Banuelos countered with a three-punch flurry. Jorgensen landed another combination and three jabs that backed a now-bloodied Banuelos up. Jorgensen connected with an overhand right and landed another one soon after. Jorgensen landed a lead left hook and Banuelos threw back a combination.

More punches landed for Jorgensen as Banuelos backed up. Jorgensen scored with a head kick and a combination. A body kick and a jab landed for Jorgensen and he dropped Banuelos with a hook. Banuelos, bleeding badly from the nose, held on as Jorgensen took his back and landed more punches. The fighters stood and Jorgensen landed a knee. Banuelos answered with a grazing head kick. 10-9 Jorgensen.

Round 3:
Banuelos just missed with a looping overhand right in the final round and Jorgensen tagged him with a right cross. Banuelos began to bleed heavily from the nose again and the fighters exchanged hard strikes. Jorgensen landed a front kick and a jab that backed Banuelos up. Jorgensen walked Banuelos down, but Banuelos used his jab to keep Jorgensen at bay. Hard right hands found the mark for Jorgensen.

A right hook scored for Jorgensen and he dropped Banuelos with a short right cross. Banuelos survived as Jorgensen threw punches and took his back. Jorgensen secured a rear-naked choke, but Banuelos powered out. Jorgensen worked from mount and then took Banuelos’s back again. Jorgensen peppered Banuelos with hammerfists and elbows. Jorgensen secured another choke, but Banuelos escaped. Great fight. 10-9 Jorgensen.

Winner: Scott Jorgensen by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds. He improves to 10-3-0.
